English Abstract

The study discusses the presence of intraretinal and subretinal fluid in patients with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAAION). The condition, characterized by painless unilateral acute vision loss, may involve the formation of fluid and subsequent visual impairment. The use of corticosteroids to reduce optic disc swelling and improve visual outcome has been proposed. The presence of subretinal fluid was found to be associated with extensive optic disc swelling and thinning of retinal layers. The study also discusses the pathogenesis of fluid in NAAION compared to other disorders and proposes a hypothesis related to venous hypertension induced transudation. The authors found no significant difference in visual outcomes between patients treated with corticosteroids and those who were not. The study suggests the need for a randomized prospective study to definitively evaluate the efficacy of steroids in NAAION associated with subretinal fluid.
